Sajal Kumar Mitra is a professional watercolor artist with over three decades of dedication to plein air painting. Born in 1960 and largely self-taught, his practice is grounded in the direct, visceral capture of light, atmosphere, and the living energy of place. Working on location, he translates fleeting moments into enduring visual narratives through a spontaneous yet controlled use of watercolor.Mitra has traveled extensively across India and abroad, painting outdoors in culturally rich sites such as Khajuraho, Jaipur, Jodhpur, Varanasi, and Kolkata. Immersion in local architecture and everyday life has deeply shaped his distinctive visual language. In 2023, he was invited by the Ministry of Culture to paint on location inside Delhi’s Red Fort during the India Art–Architecture–Design Biennale.His work has been exhibited and recognized nationally and internationally, and is held in prestigious collections including the Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India. In July 2024, Mitra was featured as a finalist in Artists Magazine (USA) for the Splash 25: Best of Watercolor competition. Through his art, he continues to document lived experience while crafting evocative visual stories rooted in place and time.
