Ahmedabad based painter Manish Modi’s (b. 1977) family had a newspaper business, and his early years were spent around the printing press. This influenced his early experiments with painting on newsprint paper. Trained in Vadodara, Modi is invested in the narrative style of painting and believes in the role of artists as catalysts for social and political change. His compositions are juxtapositions developed from archival images, published text, and other material investigations sourced from contemporary mass media. Extending his interest in print media, Modi's work interlaces languages of photorealism, and immersive painting inspired by artists such as Atul Dodiya, Jitish Kallat, Gerard Richter, and Anselm Kiefer.
Modi’s solo exhibitions include Rehashed at Lemon Grasshopper Gallery, Ahmedabad (2010), and An Artist Within, Dubai International Art Centre (2003). He has participated in numerous group exhibitions including Hyder Ahmed Travels, Catharsis Art Gallery (2017); White: Absence & Opulence, Kanoria Centre For Art. Ahmedabad (2014); 150 Years of Service to the Nation, organized by the Income Tax Department Gujarat at Ravi Sankar Raval Kala Bhavan, Ahmedabad (2010); Harmony Art Show by Reliance Capital at Nehru Centre, Mumbai (2007); Ways Of Seeing, curated by Sushma Bahl at India Habit Art Centre, New Delhi (2005); Images on Images, Kanoria Centre for Arts, Ahmedabad (2002) and 30 Below 40, Ravi Shankar Raval Kala Bhavan, Ahmedabad (2000) among others.
